That's why we recommend filing Form 4868 with the IRS to request a filing extension. This form can be submitted electronically or by mail, and it grants you an additional six months to file your tax return. Keep in mind that while the extension gives you more time to file, it does not extend the deadline for paying any taxes owed. To avoid penalties and interest, it's important to estimate and pay as much as you can by the original deadline.
