SHA-256 is a key player in maintaining the immutability of blockchain technology in cryptocurrencies. As a cryptographic hash function, it takes any input data and produces a unique fixed-size output hash value. This hash value serves as a digital fingerprint for the input data, making it virtually impossible to reverse-engineer the original data from the hash value. In the context of blockchain, each block contains a hash value that is generated by applying the SHA-256 algorithm to the block's data, including the previous block's hash value. This creates a chain of blocks, where each block's hash value is dependent on the previous block's hash value. If someone tries to tamper with the data in a block, the hash value will change, and the entire chain of blocks will be disrupted. This tampering attempt will be easily detected by the network, ensuring the integrity and immutability of the blockchain.
